Consequences of Canada’s New Impaired Driving Penalties on Temporary and Permanent Residents

On December 18, 2018, new impaired driving penalties took effect and moost impaired driving offences are now considered serious crimes in Canada. The maximum penalty for impaired driving offences will increase from 5 to 10 years.

Temporary and permanent residents who commit an impaired driving offence in or outside Canada may be found inadmissible. This means permanent residents may lose their status and have to leave the country and temporary residents may not be able to enter or remain in Canada.
