Changes to Canadian Citizenship Act

Published on October 4, 2017

An Act to Amend the Citizenship Act was approved on June 19, 2017 with the intent of streamlining the Citizenship application process.

Today, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced that implementation of the changes to residency and language requirements will be implemented October 11, 2017. Applicants who meet the new requirements should wait until implementation of the changes before submitting their applications.

The new requirements will help individuals who have already begun building lives in Canada achieve citizenship faster.
